Sea Harrier Preservation Project (SHPP)

The Sea Harrier Preservation Project is committed to operating responsibly and minimising the environmental impact of all its activities. As a heritage preservation and education project, SHPP recognises the importance of protecting the environment while safeguarding historic aircraft for future generations.

Renewable Energy and Resource Use

Wherever practical, SHPP will use renewable and low-carbon energy sources to help power its facilities, workshops, and exhibitions. This includes the use of solar energy and energy-efficient systems to reduce overall consumption and reliance on fossil fuels.

Aircraft Condition and Environmental Safety

All aircraft preserved by SHPP are maintained in a dry, non-operational condition. They are not flown, fueled, or run, and do not contain active fuel systems. This significantly reduces environmental risk and ensures the aircraft can be preserved safely without emissions or routine fuel handling.

Hazardous Materials and Chemical Management

Any hazardous materials encountered during acquisition, transport, inspection, or restoration — including oils, lubricants, fuels, hydraulic fluids, paints, solvents, and legacy chemicals — will be managed responsibly. All chemicals and paints used in the restoration process will be securely and adequately stored, clearly labelled, and handled in accordance with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.

SHPP is committed to the ethical, legal, and environmentally sound disposal of all hazardous materials through approved waste contractors, ensuring compliance with UK environmental legislation and best practice.

Responsible Restoration and Maintenance

Restoration and conservation work will prioritise reuse, repair, and preservation over replacement wherever possible. Materials will be sourced responsibly, and waste will be minimised through careful planning, controlled processes, and appropriate storage and handling of consumables.

Education and Environmental Awareness

Environmental responsibility forms part of SHPP’s wider educational mission. Through STEM activities, workshops, and public engagement, the project will promote awareness of sustainability, engineering efficiency, and responsible resource management alongside aviation heritage.

Continuous Improvement

SHPP will regularly review its environmental practices and seek opportunities to improve sustainability as the project grows. Environmental considerations will be factored into future site development, exhibitions, and operational planning.
